This collection of portraits celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and joy in the Northeast Kingdom community. Featuring performers, patrons, and organizers of an innovative event series celebrating LGBTQIA+ culture in Northern New England, the project highlights the courage of those who embrace fearless self-expression, opening the doors to transformative and inclusive community spaces.
With robust guidance from Rutland County Pride, longtime hosts of Rutland’s Fierce Friday and Drag Bingo events, Molly and Galen championed the development of an interactive LGBTQIA+ event series in a repurposed mall in rural Vermont. Created in partnership between Catamount Arts and Rutland County Pride with support from the Northeast Kingdom Rainbow Coalition, North Country Pride, Umbrella, Vermont Humanities, the Vermont Arts Council, and Northeast Kingdom Community Action, the events included the Be Mine Ball, the Fall In Love Ball, and Drag King Night: “Night at the Telegraph Club”.
Headlining each event was a Drag Ball with dazzling performances by the region’s most celebrated drag artists making their Northeast Kingdom debuts. In addition, each event featured opportunities to enjoy meaningful engagement in community: a Beauty Bar where patrons could practice applying make-up or watch the transformation of drag queen Amy Leigh Celestial by fellow queen Bethadone Clinique; a professional photo booth by artist Craig Harrison of Harrison Creative; tarot readings using Queer-centered decks; and suit fittings by Galen Blodgett of Gold Thread Coaching.
Attendees could enjoy food and drink from local vendors, contribute to a community mural, learn to apply fake eyelashes, interact with drag artists, pick up a free copy of the latest Vermont Reads book selection, meet representatives from supportive community organizations, and dance the night away in a post-show after-party. Every event in the series provided attendees a dedicated safe space to relax, enjoy, and be themselves right here in the community, where everyone belongs.
